Here’s the lowdown

What Are PNPs?

PNPs are special immigration pathways run by Canadian provinces (except Quebec and Nunavut), in partnership with IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). Each province picks candidates who match their labour needs—like skilled workers, students, investors, and more!

Once chosen (aka nominated), you can apply for permanent residence through: 

  • Express Entry (Enhanced Stream) – faster!
  • Non-Express Entry (Base Stream) – direct and flexible.

Basic Requirements:

  • Work experience or education that matches local job needs
  • A real intent to live in that province
  • Often a job offer or Canadian study/work experience
  • Language test results (English/French)
  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if you studied outside Canada

Ways to Apply:

  1. Enhanced Stream (Express Entry)
  • Create a profile on Express Entry
  • Get a Notification of Interest (NOI) from a province
  • Apply through that province’s Express Entry stream
  • If nominated, you get +600 points added to your CRS score
  • That almost guarantees an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
  • Apply for PR — processing takes ~6 months!
  1. Base Stream (Non-Express Entry)
  • Apply directly through the province’s immigration portal
  • Get nominated and receive a certificate
  • Apply for PR through the regular system
  • Takes 15–18 months, including medical/security checks

Fees and Timelines:

  • Express Entry: Govt PR fees + biometrics (CAD 85/person) – 6 months after nomination
  • Base Stream: Same federal fees + possible provincial fee – 15–18 months

Pro Tips for Success:

  • Choose your province wisely—you must actually plan to live there!
  • Get your documents right (ECA, language test, job proof, etc.)
  • Boost your CRS score early (language scores help A LOT)
  • Be honest and accurate—mistakes or lies can get you banned
  • Allow time—some provinces process applications slower than others
