Discover practical, low-cost ways to relocate from Nigeria to Canada. This guide covers study options for Nigerians who want to study in Canada.

Introduction

Are you thinking of studying in Canada? Many Nigerian students think that studying abroad is for the wealthy, that is true in some cases but not all because with proper planning, you can relocate to Canada on a low budget for your education.

Why Canada?

Canada is one of the top destinations for Nigerians due to its high quality of life, high quality education, diverse communities, and friendly immigration policies. As a student, planning to study in Canada here are some things you should prepare and take note of when making your decision.

Chose Affordable Schools

First of start by finding information about low-budget colleges and universities especially those in provinces like Manitoba, Newfoundland, or Saskatchewan. These universities offer quality education at low cost compared to other provinces.

Internship Programs

Internships, commonly referred to as co-op programs in Canada, allow students to gain practical work experience while earning an income. This can be a game-changer for budget-conscious international students looking to reduce financial pressure and gain Canadian work experience. Not only do these programs ease financial burdens by allowing you to earn while you learn, but they also give you a head start in the Canadian job market. With smart planning and the right school choice, studying in Canada can be both affordable and rewarding.

      3. Plan Smart Travel

Book flights early and search for student travel deals. Arrive before your program starts and plan low-cost accommodation (shared housing works best!). This helps a lot because it cuts down the cost needed for your flight, and helps in getting early accommodation. It’s best if you are early, like 1 or 2 weeks before your program starts, this helps you get used to the weather and timezone difference, attend orientation to get to know the University better and prepare your essentials (bank account, simcard and transportation card).

      4. Get Your Documents Ready

You’ll need:

  • A valid international passport
  • Your WAEC/NECO results or academic transcripts
  • IELTS or TOEFL (if required)
Some schools may waive English tests if you studied in English – so ask!

All these documents are important, make sure you have them and they are accurate and up to date to avoid issues that may arise later if not correct. You will need all these documents during the process of applying for your Visa.

     5. Secure Proof of Funds (POF)

Canada requires proof you can support yourself. You need:

  • Tuition fee (varies by school so look for schools with cheaper fees).
  • At least – ₦17 million (CAD $15,263) for living expenses
You can show this through: A sponsor’s bank statement,  student loan or Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) if using the Student Direct Stream

Final Thoughts

Relocating to Canada from Nigeria on a low budget is possible if you stay informed, focused, and proactive. Avoid quick-fix scams, do your own research, and tap into communities already abroad. Your Canadian dream is within reach starting today.
